Adams Puryear Artist Talk

Date: Friday June, 14th

Time: 5PM

Lecturer: Adams Puryear

About the artist:

ADAMS PURYEAR'S WORK MERGES CRAFT TRADITIONS WITH UNEXPECTED MODES OF SCULPTURE AND INSTALLATION. BY APPROACHING 3D ART FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES AND USING A VARIETY OF MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES, HE PRESENTS VISIONS OF TODAY AND TOMORROWS’ INTERNET DEPENDENT CULTURE OF CONVENIENCE.

ADAMS BORROWS CORE STRATEGIES FROM THE PUNK MUSIC HE GREW UP WITH. THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF BANDS LIKE THE RAMONES OR STOOGES ARE STRAIGHTFORWARD: A FEW SIMPLE GUITAR CHORDS AND UNADORNED DRUM PATTERNS. BUT WHAT IS EVOKED IN THE FEELING AND ATTITUDE GIVES THE MUSIC A LASTING EFFECT. CAN ANYONE REALLY DO BETTER THAN IGGY POP, HIGH ON ACID, SMEARING PEANUT BUTTER AND GLITTER ON HIMSELF DURING A SONG IN FRONT OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE? WITHIN PURYEAR'S ARTWORK HE REFLECTS THIS ATTITUDE AND STYLE OF IGGY AND THE OTHER PUNKS BY REDUCING MY WORK TO THE ELEMENTAL WHICH ALLOWS GREATER FOCUS FOR THE ENERGY ON DISPLAY.

ADAMS PURYEAR HOLDS AN MFA FROM INDIANA UNIVERSITY AND A BFA FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS COLLEGE OF ART.  PURYEAR'S WORK HAS BEEN FEATURED IN AND AROUND NEW YORK CITY IN SOLO AND GROUP EXHIBITIONS WHERE HE WAS FORMALLY BASED, NATIONALLY IN GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS SUCH AS THE NELSON-ATKINS IN KANSAS CITY, MO AND THE KENNEDY MUSEUM IN ATHENS, OH, AND INTERNATIONALLY AT GALLERIES SUCH AS GALERIE CHRISTINE MAYER, MUNICH, GR, AND MUSEUMS LIKE ICHEON WORLD CERAMIC CENTER IN SOUTH KOREA.  HE IS CURRENTLY A LECTURER AT THE KANSAS CITY ART INSTITUTE.

The Birth of Form: Wheel Throwing Workshop

Date: Saturday + Sunday, June 8th & 9th, 2024

Time: Both Days: 10AM-12PM (lunch break) 2PM - 4PM

Description:

This workshop welcomes newer students learning to throw, as well as experienced potters wanting to hone their sensitivity to form. We will start with simple forms such as small cylinders and bowls focusing on the fundamentals of body alignment, centering, and forming with ribs. We will cover fun forms suitable for newer students, such as citrus presses, candle sticks and drinking vessels. Emphasis will be placed on staying relaxed and developing flow and awareness so we can learn what the clay teaches.

Later, more complex forms will be introduced: covered jars, casseroles, and narrow-mouthed vases, as well as how to throw lids of different sorts and spouts. The process of pulling handles will be demonstrated and practiced with attention to fitting handles to each shape. There will be time for requests from students for particular forms as well.

Pre-recs: Students should be able to center and throw a 6" cylinder

Class includes bisque firing for work created in the workshop.

Instructor: Alan Holiday

About the artist:

Alan Holiday is a studio potter in Santa Cruz, California, who began throwing pots in 1977, the same year he began his study of the Japanese martial art of Aikido. He has continued both centering practices to this day. In his teaching, he emphasizes that throwing pots takes patience, discipline, and humility. It is a practice that fosters a centered, process-over-product state of mind that is healing as well as creative. Holiday trained under master potter Al Johnsen who was a student of Marguerite Wildenhain. Wildenhain, a strict teacher of pottery form, was trained at the Bauhaus in pre-war Germany. The Bauhaus was a unique school that combined art education with classes taught by craftspeople from the salt glaze throwing tradition dating back to the Middle Ages.

3D Printing Workshop w/ Virginia San Fratello

Description: In this workshop, you will learn how to use the Potterware software to design your own 3D printed “textile cup” and use a 3D printer to extrude clay to make the finished piece. We will be paste extruding with clay, using a 3D potter, to create 3D printed ceramic textile cups inspired by the material culture of “basket pottery. It is presumed that the first clay vessels were formed by women carrying water, pressing mud into a grass or reed basket to make them watertight. Eventually…
