Job Title:  Studio Technician

Location: Maker House, Santa Barbara

Reports To: Studio Manager

Type: Part Time - 1 year commitment, must have evening and weekend availability

Starting Rate: $19-$22 dependant on experience

Position Overview

We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Studio Technician to support the operational needs of our ceramic studio. This essential role focuses on maintaining an efficient and welcoming workspace, addressing technical challenges, and fostering a positive and productive environment for staff, interns, and community members. We seek a dedicated candidate eager to grow with us and ensure that daily responsibilities are completed efficiently. 

Key Responsibilities

Studio Maintenance:

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the studio, including mopping floors, cleaning equipment, and communicating supply and studio needs to the Manager.

  • Exhibit diligence by consistently monitoring and maintaining studio tidiness while moving throughout the space.

  • Identify areas for improvement and take the initiative to enhance studio conditions.

Problem Solving:

  • Self-motivation in addressing and resolving technical issues, including kiln repairs and equipment malfunctions.

  • Anticipate potential problems and develop proactive solutions.

Intern and Staff Supervision:

  • Mentor interns, ensuring they understand their tasks and responsibilities.

Communication:

  • Maintain regular communication with the Studio Manager and Techs regarding studio needs and updates.

  • Follow up on ongoing projects and tasks to ensure timely completion.

  • Customer service: Sell clay/tools and be available to help members and students. 

  • Stay informed of daily tasks completed and needing completion.

Task Management:

  • Ensure weekly tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.

  • Take ownership of assigned projects, seeing them through to completion.

Safety Practices:

  • Understand and communicate ceramic studio risks and hazards, promoting safe work practices within the studio.

Community Awareness:

  • Be aware of community needs and effectively communicate studio procedures to members.

Qualifications

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Familiarity with studio equipment and maintenance practices is preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills with a willingness to receive and act on feedback.

  • Openness to learning and adapting to changing studio needs.

  • Previous experience in a studio or similar environment preferred.

  • Understanding of kiln and clay studio equipment maintenance is a plus.
